Piano

 At Music Steps we are firm believers that  piano study can be fun and engaging from the very first time our students touch the piano keys. Highlights of our lessons:

  • Taught to ages 4 to 99
  • Offered in person and online
  • Will learn all fundamentals of playing the piano
  • Interpretation taught through use of imagery and technique
  • We encourage creativity through improvisation and basic composition activities
  • Movement and listening activities included
  • Duets and ensemble playing with lesson "buddy" or with Ms. Nora
  • Repertoire chosen from a wide variety of musical genres and composers
  • Successful preparation for Royal Conservatory of Music exams available-many of our students  achieved First Class with Distinction in their exams

Piano-Mini Musicians

 Mini Musicians is a curriculum especially designed to be a positive, creative and exploratory first introduction to music. Our offer:

  • Taught to young beginners aged 3-5 years
  • Offered in person, in a group setting
  • Directed towards piano, also beneficial for students who will move on to study other instruments
  • Positive, and engaging
  • Great preparation towards more traditional piano lessons
  • Sound exploration, technique, rhythms, basic music theory, improvisation and  beginning music reading skill are all concepts we explore in every lesson
  • Concepts taught through use of percussion instruments, visual aids,  games and movement, as well as the piano, of course

Voice

  Whether singing is your hobby or a future career, this is the place to start . Our main goal is to improve vocal quality, pitch accuracy, vocal range, breath support, diction and interpretation, without ever losing sight of the pure joy of singing.  From the moment we are born, we use our voices naturally, without effort. We believe that singing should also be natural, effortless, expressive.  What you can expect in a voice lesson:

  • Silly vocal exploration and imagery use
  • Stretching and breath work inspired by yoga
  • Breath and vocal projection work through games and movement
  • Use of scarves, straws, kazoos and other many other "tools"
  • Work on diction, solfege and sight singing skills
  • Creativity encouraged through basic composition work and improvisation
  • Interpretation taught through imagery, drawing, story telling, and basic acting exercises
  •  Successful preparation for Royal Conservatory of Music exams available 


Ukulele

  Have you ever dreamed of sitting by a wood burning fire, surrounded by good friends, picking up your dusty guitar and serenading the sunset? Are your kids inspired to become the next Shawn Mendez? With a smaller size and fewer strings, the ukulele could be your first step towards achieving your dream. What you will learn:

  • Basics of holding and playing the ukulele
  • individual notes as well as chords
  • A sense of accomplishment by being able to play simple songs from the beginning
  • Strumming patterns and how to use them
  • Variety of repertoire inspired by the student's interests


Music and Movement

Do you want to give your young child the best possible start in life? Do you want them to grow up to have great social, language and literacy skills? Do you want to have a great connection with them? Music and movement classes are the best place to start. Our activities are fun, engaging and age appropriate, but more so, they are all research based, meant to .address all different facets of your child's development. 

If you have a group of fellow parents or a daycare facility, and are looking for an engaging music class, look no further. Some of the activities you can expect in your classes are:

  • A variety of songs and rhymes
  • Different styles of music from classical, to jazz, to folksongs from all over the world 
  • Percussion instruments like bells, shakers, sticks, rainsticks
  • Scarf play, ball play, drum play, bubbles, 
  • Lots and lots of movement through dance and bounces
  • Stories, rocking, cuddles, 

Music Theory

 Did you ever wonder why some songs sound happier than others? Did you ever hit an off note that made everything sound wrong and you couldn't tell why? Do you ever wonder why jazz sounds so different from classical music?

When you understand how notes relate to each other, when you recognize how songs you play and listen to are structured, music takes on new meaning and your playing reaches new heights. Your learning will include:

  • Basic or more advanced dive into the world of  notes, intervals, scales, chords, harmony, rhythm 
  • Listening examples
  • Composition and practical activities on your instrument
  • Games and apps to aid deepen you understanding of the concepts
  • In person and/or online instruction
  •  Successful preparation for Royal Conservatory of Music exams available-our students achieved high marks in all their theory exams
